The short version: counting happens in your browser and never leaves it; AI tools send text for processing and immediately discard it; our analytics see usage metadata, never your words.
Counting happens in your browser
All counters and text utilities on WordCount (word, character, sentence, paragraph and syllable counters, the case converter, word frequency, readability checker, remove line breaks, compare text, and file word counts for .docx/.txt/.md files) run entirely in your browser with JavaScript. The text you type, paste or drop is never sent to our servers for these tools — you can verify this in your browser’s network tab.
AI tools process text, then discard it
The AI writing tools (grammar checker, paraphraser, sentence rewriter, summarizer, keyword extractor and translator) work differently: your text is sent over an encrypted connection to an AI model for processing and the result is sent back. The text is held in memory only for the duration of the request. We do not store, log or train on it — our request records keep only metadata: which tool ran, a character count, token counts, timing and status.
What our analytics see
We record small, anonymous usage events — which tool was used, a text-length bucket (like “under 500 words”), the referring site’s hostname and the interface language. These events never contain your text. We also use Ahrefs Web Analytics, a cookieless page-view counter. We run no ad networks and no cross-site trackers, and we do not sell or share data.
What stays on your device
Convenience features store data only in your browser’s local storage: your draft text (so a reload doesn’t lose it), recent counts, your word goal, and your light/dark theme choice. None of this is transmitted to us. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Accounts
Accounts are optional and only needed to save documents across devices. If you sign in, we store your email address and the documents you choose to save. A session cookie keeps you signed in — it is the only cookie the site sets, and it is not used for tracking. You can delete your documents at any time.
Questions
This page describes what the site actually does, in plain language. If anything here seems out of step with the site’s behavior, we treat that as a bug.
