What changes when English becomes Urdu
A right-to-left script with its own style
Urdu is written from right to left in a Perso-Arabic script, usually in the flowing Nastaliq style. Numbers still read left to right. They may appear as 0–9 or as Urdu digits such as ۱۲۳. English brand names in Latin letters inside an Urdu sentence can sometimes look out of place, so check them before sharing.
The verb usually comes last
English puts the verb in the middle, but Urdu normally places it at the end. “I drink tea” becomes میں چائے پیتا ہوں (main chai peeta hoon). Urdu also uses postpositions instead of prepositions: “in Lahore” is لاہور میں (Lahore mein).
Three ways to say “you”
English has one “you”. Urdu has آپ (aap, polite), تم (tum, familiar) and تو (tu, very close or blunt). The verb changes with each one, for example آئیے (aaiye) with آپ but آؤ (aao) with تم. Use “Formal (business email)” for elders and clients, and “Casual” for friends.
Verbs show the speaker’s gender
Urdu verbs often agree with the gender of the subject. “I am going” is میں جا رہا ہوں (main ja raha hoon) for a man and میں جا رہی ہوں (main ja rahi hoon) for a woman. English “I” gives no clue, so check this in the result.

Why does the Urdu change depending on whether the speaker is a man or a woman?
Urdu verbs often show the speaker’s gender, as in رہا (raha) for a man and رہی (rahi) for a woman. English does not show this, so check the verb endings and use “Show alternatives” if you need a different form.
