Translating Arabic to English: what to know
Verb-Subject Order Reversal
Arabic typically uses verb-subject-object order, while English requires subject-verb-object. A sentence like "ذهب أحمد" (went Ahmed) must become "Ahmed went" in English. This affects how you parse Arabic sentences and restructure them. Pay special attention to sentences beginning with verbs, as the subject often follows immediately after and must be moved forward in your English translation.
Definite Article Attachment
Arabic attaches "ال" (al-) directly to nouns for definiteness, while English uses the separate word "the." However, not all Arabic definite nouns need "the" in English—proper nouns, abstract concepts, and generic plurals often don't. For example, "الحياة" (al-hayat) might be "life" not "the life" depending on context. Also, Arabic repeats "ال" on adjectives modifying definite nouns, but English uses "the" only once.
Dual Number Has No English Equivalent
Arabic has three numbers: singular, dual, and plural. The dual form (for exactly two items) uses specific endings like "-ān" or "-ayn." The raw judge score appears as secondary detail in the “Why?” explanation, labeled as an estimate. The check processes your text and immediately discards it; only the score is kept.
