Translating English to Slovak: what to know

Aspect Matters in Slovak Verbs

Slovak verbs have perfective and imperfective aspects that English lacks. A single English verb often requires choosing between two Slovak forms. For example, 'to write' can be 'písať' (imperfective, ongoing) or 'napísať' (perfective, completed). Using the wrong aspect changes meaning significantly. Pay attention to whether the action is habitual, in progress, or completed when selecting the appropriate Slovak verb form.

Seven Cases Change Word Endings

Slovak nouns, adjectives, and pronouns decline through seven grammatical cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, locative, instrumental, and vocative. English relies on word order and prepositions, but Slovak uses case endings to show relationships. The word 'woman' (žena) changes to 'ženy', 'žene', 'ženu', 'žene', 'ženou', or 'žena' depending on its grammatical function. Articles don't exist in Slovak, but case endings are mandatory.

Formal 'You' Requires Different Forms

Slovak distinguishes between informal 'ty' and formal 'vy' for 'you', similar to French or German. The formal 'vy' is also used for plural 'you'. This choice affects verb conjugations, possessive pronouns, and adjectives throughout the sentence. Use 'vy' with strangers, authority figures, and professional contexts. English 'you' doesn't signal this distinction, so translators must infer appropriate formality from context and relationship between speakers.

What does the confidence band under the translation mean?

After each translation, a second AI check compares the original and the translation and shows a confidence band: High confidence, Review changes, or Meaning may have changed. It's a model estimate, not a guarantee — whatever the band says, double-check names, numbers and negations in the translation. The raw judge score appears as secondary detail in the “Why?” explanation, labeled as an estimate. The check processes your text and immediately discards it; only the score is kept.
