Thai Omits Subject Pronouns Frequently
Thai speakers often drop subject pronouns when context is clear, unlike English which requires explicit subjects. "I am going" becomes just "going" (ไป) in casual Thai. Overusing pronouns like ฉัน/ผม sounds unnatural and overly formal. Context, particles, and verb forms convey who's acting. Match the formality level: ผม/ดิฉัน for formal, ฉัน/เรา for casual, กู/มึง for very informal settings only.
No Plural Markers or Articles
Thai has no articles (a, an, the) and typically no plural forms. "The cats" and "cats" both translate as แมว. Plurality is understood from context or specified with classifiers and numbers when needed: แมว สาม ตัว (cat three [classifier] = three cats). Don't add unnecessary words trying to mark definiteness or plurality. Classifiers are required when counting but not for general plural meaning.
Verb Tenses Shown Through Context
Thai verbs don't conjugate for tense like English. The verb "eat" (กิน) stays the same for past, present, and future. Time is shown through time words (yesterday, tomorrow, already) or aspect markers like แล้ว (completed action) or กำลัง (ongoing). "I ate" becomes ฉัน กิน แล้ว. Don't search for tense endings—add time markers or context words instead to clarify when actions occur.
Politeness Particles and Pronouns — Review the Thai Before Sending
Thai marks courtesy with sentence-final particles (ครับ from a male speaker, ค่ะ from a female speaker) and picks pronouns by relationship — an English 'you' can become คุณ, or disappear entirely. A machine translation chooses one option and can't know who is speaking to whom, so a message to a customer may come out more casual or more distant than you meant.
