What changes when English becomes Polish
Ty, Pan or Pani instead of one “you”
English uses “you” for everyone. Polish uses informal ty with friends and family, and Pan (to a man), Pani (to a woman) or Państwo (to a group) with a third-person verb in polite speech. “Can you help me?” is “Możesz mi pomóc?” to a friend but “Czy może mi Pan pomóc?” to a stranger. The Formal (business email) tone leans toward the polite forms.
The speaker’s gender shows in the past tense
Polish past-tense verbs and many adjectives show gender. “I was tired” is “byłem zmęczony” for a man and “byłam zmęczona” for a woman. If the English gives no clue, the translation has to pick one, so check these forms in anything written in your name.
Cases change names and places
Polish has seven cases, so nouns, including names, change their endings: “in Warsaw” is “w Warszawie” and “with Anna” is “z Anną”.
Numbers, dates and prices
Polish uses a decimal comma and a space between thousands, so 1,250.50 becomes 1 250,50. Dates usually put the day first (12.03.2025), and the currency comes after the amount: 20 zł. The noun after a number changes too: 2 złote but 5 złotych.

Why can the Polish change depending on who is speaking?
