Greek Uses Two Past Tenses
Greek distinguishes between aorist (simple past for completed actions) and imperfect (past continuous or habitual actions). English simple past "I walked" could be either "περπάτησα" (aorist, once) or "περπατούσα" (imperfect, repeatedly/ongoing). Context determines which tense conveys the intended meaning. Choosing incorrectly changes whether an action seems finished or ongoing in the past.
Definite Articles Required More Often
Greek uses definite articles where English omits them: abstract nouns ("love" = "η αγάπη"), general statements ("dogs bark" = "οι σκύλοι γαβγίζουν"), and proper names with titles ("Mr. Smith" = "ο κύριος Σμιθ"). Conversely, Greek drops articles in some fixed expressions. Direct translation of English article usage produces unnatural Greek. Articles also inflect for gender, number, and case.
Formal and Informal You Differ
Greek distinguishes "εσύ" (informal singular you) from "εσείς" (formal/plural you), affecting verb conjugations and pronouns throughout sentences. Use "εσείς" for strangers, elders, professional contexts, and customer service. Using "εσύ" inappropriately sounds disrespectful or overly familiar. English "you" requires choosing the appropriate register based on relationship and context, not just number of people addressed.

Greek marks politeness grammatically: the plural εσείς doubles as the formal 'you', verbs conjugate to match, and greetings differ by time of day (καλημέρα, καλησπέρα).
