What changes when you translate English into Indonesian
From English to Bahasa Indonesia: no verb tenses
Indonesian verbs do not change for past, present or future. Time is shown with words such as “sudah” (already), “sedang” (in the middle of), “akan” (will) or a time phrase. “I ate” usually becomes “Saya sudah makan,” and “I will call” becomes “Saya akan menelepon.”
Choosing the right “you”
English “you” has several Indonesian equivalents. “Anda” is polite and neutral, “kamu” is casual for friends and family, and “Bapak” or “Ibu” are respectful ways to address a man or a woman at work. Use the Tone setting to steer this choice.
The noun comes first
Adjectives and possessives usually follow the noun: “big house” is “rumah besar” and “my book” is “buku saya.” Plurals are often left unmarked when context makes the number clear, or shown by repeating the word, as in “buku-buku.”
Numbers, money and dates
Indonesian uses a dot to separate thousands and a comma for decimals, so 1,500,000 rupiah is written “Rp1.500.000” and 2.5 becomes “2,5.” Dates usually follow day-month-year order.
