Choosing a speed by job
For proofreading your own writing, 1x-1.25x catches awkward phrasing without sounding rushed. For a quick skim of a long article, 1.5x-2x gets through it fast while staying intelligible. For a new language you're learning, 0.5x-0.75x slows down individual words so pronunciation is clearer.
When a word sounds wrong
Device voices sometimes mispronounce uncommon names, abbreviations or loanwords — that's a limit of the browser's speech engine, not something this page controls. Spelling the word phonetically in your own text (temporarily, for the read-aloud) usually fixes it; there's no pronunciation dictionary here.
No voice for your language?
If your device has no installed voice for the page's language, the voice list stays empty and read-aloud can't run — the page says so plainly rather than silently failing. When that happens, the optional AI voice button appears; it sends your text once to generate audio, then discards it (never stored).

Is my text uploaded to a server?
Not for the standard read-aloud — that runs entirely in your browser using your device's built-in voices (the Web Speech API), and your text never leaves your device. The optional AI voice — offered only when your device has no voice for the page language — sends your text once to our AI provider to synthesize the audio, then it is immediately discarded. We never store your text or the audio.
Which languages and voices are available?
Whatever your device offers — most phones and desktops include voices for dozens of languages, and the list shows the voices installed for this page's language. If your device has none, you can generate the audio with our AI voice instead.
Can I make it read faster or slower?
Yes — use the speed slider (0.5× to 2×). The setting applies the next time you press Read aloud.
Can I dictate text instead of typing?
On browsers that support speech recognition (Chrome, Edge, Safari) you'll see a Dictate button — tap it and speak; your words appear in the editor.
Is it really free? Any limits?
Completely free, no account, no caps — because it runs on your device, it costs us nothing per use.
