What changes when English becomes Ukrainian
Ти or ви: how polite should «you» be?
English has one «you», but Ukrainian usually chooses between «ти» for a friend, child or family member and «ви» for one person you address politely or for several people. In business letters «Ви» is often capitalized as a sign of respect. Set Tone to Formal (business email) for official messages, or Casual for friends.
Case and gender change word endings
Ukrainian nouns have seven cases, so one word can take several forms: «Київ» (Kyiv) becomes «у Києві» (u Kyievi, «in Kyiv»). Past-tense verbs also show gender: «I wrote» is «я написав» when a man writes and «я написала» when a woman writes. English «I» gives no clue, so check these endings.
Cyrillic letters and Latin spelling
Ukrainian Cyrillic has letters such as і, ї, є and ґ. Show pronunciation adds an approximate Latin transliteration under the result, for example «Дякую» as Diakuiu («thank you»).
Dates, numbers and money
Dates are usually written day first: 05.03.2025 means 5 March. Decimals use a comma (3,5), thousands are separated by a space, and prices are given in hryvnias (грн or ₴).
