Free Tamil to English Translator with Tone Control

For students, families and workers who need Tamil messages, letters and notes in clear English. Tamil puts the verb at the end and packs person, tense and respect into word endings, so each English sentence has to be rebuilt rather than copied word by word.

What changes when Tamil becomes English

The verb comes last

Tamil usually follows subject–object–verb order and uses case endings where English uses prepositions. In நான் பள்ளிக்குப் போகிறேன் (nāṉ paḷḷikkup pōkiṟēṉ), the ending -க்கு on பள்ளி (school) does the work of “to”, and the verb comes at the end: “I am going to school.” The English sentence has to be reordered, not just translated word by word.

One English “you” for two Tamil forms

Tamil separates நீ (nī), used with close friends and children, from the respectful நீங்கள் (nīṅkaḷ). English has only “you”, so the respect has to come through word choice. Set Tone to “Formal (business email)” for letters to officials or teachers, or “Casual” for family chats.

Spoken and written Tamil differ

Written Tamil and everyday speech often use different word forms. “I am going” is போகிறேன் (pōkiṟēṉ) in writing but usually போறேன் (pōṟēṉ) in speech. Chat messages typed the way people talk may translate less smoothly, so check the result.

Spelling names in English

Tamil has its own script, and some sounds have more than one Latin spelling. The letter ழ is written “zh” or “l”, which is why தமிழ் appears as both Tamizh and Tamil. Check that personal and place names match the spelling used on official papers.

How do I translate Tamil to English words and sentences here?

Type or paste your Tamil text into the input box, or use Dictate to speak it, then run the translation. You can pick a Tone first, and click Show alternatives to see two or three other ways to phrase the English.

Why does the English sometimes sound stiff compared with the Tamil?

Tamil shows respect through forms like நீங்கள் and through verb endings, and English has no direct equivalent. Choosing “Formal (business email)” or “Casual” under Tone helps the English match the relationship between the people involved.

How much Tamil text can I translate at once, and can I open documents?

Each run takes up to 5,000 characters, so split longer texts into parts. You can open DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT files. The text is extracted in your browser and placed in the editor, but the layout is not kept. PDFs are not supported; for photos and screenshots, use the «Photo / screenshot» button (the image is sent to be read and not stored).

Is it safe to translate personal letters or family documents?

Your text is sent to an AI model, translated, returned and then discarded. It is not stored and not used for training. Still, double-check names, dates and amounts in the English before you send anything official.

Can I see the Tamil text in Latin letters or hear how it sounds?

There is no romanization feature for this pair, so the Tamil stays in its own script. The phrase table above shows transliterations, and Read aloud speaks the English translation.

Can I type Tamil in English letters instead of Tamil script?

Tamil in its own script gives the clearest input, because Latin spellings of Tamil words vary from person to person. If you type Tamil in Latin letters, check the English carefully.

Can I translate English back into Tamil?

Yes. Click Swap languages to reverse the direction. Your text stays in place.

How do I know whether the translation kept my meaning?

After each translation, a second AI check compares the Tamil with the English and shows a result next to “Meaning kept:”. It is an estimate, so still check names, numbers and negatives yourself.

Can I translate a photo of a Tamil letter?

Yes, with the “Photo / screenshot” button; the image is sent to a server and an AI model only to read the text, and it is not stored. Handwriting may not be read reliably, so check the text. You can also type the text in, dictate it, or open it as a DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT file.
