What changes when English becomes Japanese
Three scripts in one sentence
Japanese mixes kanji (Chinese characters), hiragana and katakana. Loanwords and foreign names usually appear in katakana, so “computer” becomes コンピューター (konpyūtā) and “Smith” becomes スミス (Sumisu). Grammar endings are written in hiragana.
Politeness is built into the verb
The same English sentence can have several Japanese forms. “Thank you” is ありがとうございます (arigatō gozaimasu) to a customer and ありがとう (arigatō) to a friend. Choose “Formal (business email)” or “Casual” under Tone to get the level you need.
Verb at the end, particles in between
Japanese usually puts the verb last and marks each word’s role with particles such as は (wa), を (o) and に (ni). “I drink coffee” becomes 私はコーヒーを飲みます (watashi wa kōhī o nomimasu). When the context is clear, “I” and “you” are often left out.
No articles, rarely plurals
Japanese has no words for “a” or “the,” and nouns usually don’t change for plural: 本 (hon) can mean “a book,” “the book” or “books.” Check that your meaning survives when the difference matters.

Should my Japanese be formal or casual?
For customers, colleagues or strangers, choose “Formal (business email)” to get polite です/ます forms. For friends and family, “Casual” gives plain forms, and “Match the original” follows the tone of your English. “Show alternatives” offers 2–3 versions in different registers.
How can I see how the Japanese is pronounced?
Click “Show pronunciation” to see an approximate romaji version of the Japanese under the result. You can also press “Read aloud” to hear it.
How long can my text be, and can I upload a document?
Each run handles up to 5,000 characters; split longer texts into parts. You can open a DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT file, but only the text is carried over, not the layout. PDFs aren’t supported, but photos and screenshots can be read with the “Photo / screenshot” button.
Is it safe to translate work emails or personal messages?
Your text is sent to an AI model, translated, returned and then discarded. It isn’t stored or used for training.
Can I translate a photo of a Japanese sign or menu?
Yes. Use the “Photo / screenshot” button next to Translate to pick a photo, take one with your phone camera, paste an image, or drag and drop one. The image is sent to the server, where an AI model reads its text, and it is not stored. You can also type the text, dictate English with “Dictate,” or use “Swap languages” and paste Japanese text you already have.
Can I translate to Japanese from a language other than English?
Yes. The tool covers 44 languages in any direction, and the source can be set to automatic detection.
How reliable is the Japanese result?
After each translation, a second AI check compares both texts and shows a confidence band. It’s an estimate, so double-check names, numbers and negations, especially in business text.
