Translating German to English: what to know
Verb Position Differs Significantly
German places verbs at the end of subordinate clauses and splits separable verbs in main clauses. English maintains subject-verb-object order consistently. When translating 'Ich weiß, dass er gestern angekommen ist,' the verb 'ist' comes last in German but 'arrived' follows the subject in English: 'I know that he arrived yesterday.' Reorder carefully to maintain natural English flow.
Case System Doesn't Transfer
German uses four cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive) that affect articles, adjectives, and pronouns. English relies on word order and prepositions instead. 'Dem Mann' (dative) becomes 'to the man' or just 'the man' depending on context. Don't attempt to preserve case distinctions; focus on conveying the grammatical relationship through English structure and appropriate prepositions.
Capitalization Rules Are Opposite
German capitalizes all nouns regardless of their importance, while English capitalizes only proper nouns and sentence beginnings. 'Die Katze trinkt Milch' becomes 'The cat drinks milk,' not 'The Cat drinks Milk.' This is one of the most visible differences. Additionally, the formal 'Sie' (you) is capitalized in German but 'you' remains lowercase in English.

What does the “Meaning kept” score mean?
After each translation, a second AI check compares the original and the translation and scores how closely the meaning survived (100 = same meaning). Below 90 you'll see a warning — double-check names, numbers and negations. The check processes your text and immediately discards it; only the score is kept.
