What changes when English becomes German
One English “you”, several German forms
English uses “you” for everyone. German usually picks between informal du (one person), ihr (several people) and polite Sie. “Can you help me?” becomes “Können Sie mir helfen?” for a customer and “Kannst du mir helfen?” for a friend. The Tone setting “Formal (business email)” leans toward Sie, and “Casual” leans toward du.
Gender and case change the word “the”
Every German noun has a gender, and the article also changes with its role in the sentence. “The table” is “der Tisch”, but “I see the table” is “Ich sehe den Tisch”. German also capitalizes all nouns.
The verb moves
In a main clause, the conjugated verb usually comes second. In clauses with “dass” or “weil”, it moves to the end. For example, “I know that he is coming today” becomes “Ich weiß, dass er heute kommt.”
False friends and number formats
“Bekommen” means “to get”, not “to become”, and “Gift” means “poison”. German uses a decimal comma, so 3.5 becomes 3,5. It also often uses a period or a space to group thousands, as in 1.000.

Common tasks — English to German
How do I translate English to German here?
Type or paste your text, or use Dictate. German is already set as the target language. Pick a Tone and start the translation, then look at the “Meaning kept:” result under the German text.
Should my German use du or Sie?
Use Sie for customers, teachers, officials and people you don’t know well. Use du for friends, family and children. Choose “Formal (business email)” or “Casual” under Tone, or keep “Match the original” and let the AI decide.
Is this only for texts going from English to Germany, or also to Austria and Switzerland?
The translator writes standard German, which readers in all three countries understand. Swiss German spelling uses “ss” instead of “ß”, so you may want to change that yourself for Swiss readers.
How long can my text be, and can I upload a document?
Each run takes up to 5,000 characters, so split longer texts into parts. You can open DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT files, and their text is placed in the editor. Formatting is not kept, and PDFs and images are not supported.
Is it safe to translate work emails or personal letters?
Your text is sent to an AI model, translated, returned and then discarded. It is not stored and not used for training.
Can I translate English to Deutsch and back again?
Yes. Click “Swap languages” to turn German into English. Your text stays in place, so you can check a German reply you received.
Can I hear how the German sounds?
Yes, click “Read aloud” to hear the German translation. The “Show pronunciation” option is not offered for this pair because both languages use the Latin alphabet.
Can I translate a photo or a spoken conversation?
No. Photos and live conversations are not supported. You can dictate English into the input box with Dictate and then have the German read aloud.
How far can I trust the German result?
A second AI check compares your text with the translation and shows a confidence band, but this is only an estimate. Always check names, numbers and negations such as “nicht” and “kein” yourself.
