What changes when English becomes Hindi
Why English words often stay English in Hindi translation
Everyday Hindi borrows many English words, especially for work and technology: “computer” usually becomes कंप्यूटर and “office” ऑफ़िस. Formal writing may use a Sanskrit-based word instead. Large numbers often follow the Indian system, so 100,000 is one lakh (1,00,000).
The verb usually comes last
Hindi normally uses subject–object–verb order and puts postpositions after the noun. “I am reading a book” becomes मैं किताब पढ़ रहा हूँ (maiṁ kitāb paṛh rahā hūṁ), and “in the house” becomes घर में (ghar meṁ).
Gender shows up in the verb
English “I” does not show gender, but many Hindi verb forms do. A man says मैं जा रहा हूँ and a woman says मैं जा रही हूँ (“I am going”). If the English does not make the speaker clear, check the verb endings in the result.
Three ways to say “you”
Hindi has आप (respectful), तुम (familiar) and तू (very intimate or rude, depending on context). Use Formal for teachers, elders and clients, and Casual for friends.
