What changes when English becomes Russian
One English “you”, two Russian forms
Russian uses ты with friends, family and children, and вы with strangers, colleagues and anyone you address politely. Вы is also the plural. Verbs change with it too: “Can you help?” becomes “Ты можешь помочь?” or “Вы можете помочь?”. Set Tone to “Formal (business email)” or “Casual” to choose.
Gender shows up in the past tense
English “I was tired” hides the speaker’s gender, but Russian usually shows it: a man writes “я устал”, a woman writes “я устала”. Nouns have three genders and six cases, so endings shift with their role in the sentence. Check these endings when the English gives no clue.
Idioms from English to Russian rarely translate word for word
“It’s raining cats and dogs” becomes “льёт как из ведра” (“it pours as if from a bucket”). A literal rendering confuses Russian readers. Try “Show alternatives” to compare phrasings in different registers.
Dates and numbers look different
Russian usually writes the day first (25.12.2024), uses a decimal comma (3,5) and separates thousands with a space (10 000). Keep this in mind for invoices, schedules and prices.
