Translating English to Spanish: what to know

Subject Pronouns Often Dropped

Spanish verb conjugations indicate the subject, so pronouns like 'yo', 'tú', 'él' are frequently omitted unless needed for emphasis or clarity. English 'I eat' becomes simply 'como', not 'yo como' in most contexts. Including pronouns unnecessarily sounds unnatural and overly emphatic to native Spanish speakers.

Adjective Placement and Gender Agreement

Most Spanish adjectives follow the noun they modify, opposite to English word order. Additionally, adjectives must match the noun's gender and number: 'the red house' becomes 'la casa roja' (feminine singular), while 'the red cars' is 'los coches rojos' (masculine plural). Some adjectives like 'grande' change meaning based on position.

Ser vs. Estar for 'To Be'

Spanish uses two verbs for English 'to be'. 'Ser' indicates permanent characteristics, identity, time, and origin: 'soy alto' (I am tall). 'Estar' expresses temporary states, location, and conditions: 'estoy cansado' (I am tired). Using the wrong verb changes meaning: 'es aburrido' means 'he is boring' while 'está aburrido' means 'he is bored'.

What does the “Meaning kept” score mean?

After each translation, a second AI check compares the original and the translation and scores how closely the meaning survived (100 = same meaning). Below 90 you'll see a warning — double-check names, numbers and negations. The check processes your text and immediately discards it; only the score is kept.
