How Roman numerals work
- I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.
- Letters are added from left to right: VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8.
- A letter of smaller value before a larger one is subtracted, only in six pairs: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.
- The same letter is not repeated more than three times in a row: 4 is IV, not IIII (except on some clock faces).
- V, L and D are never repeated and never subtracted.
Why the limit is 3,999
With only the seven letters, the largest number you can write in the standard way is MMMCMXCIX = 3,999. Larger values used a bar over a letter (V̄ = 5,000), but that notation is rare today and isn't supported by this converter.
Frequently asked questions
How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI: MM = 2,000, XX = 20, VI = 6.
Is IIII correct?
Not in the standard form; 4 is written IV. IIII does appear on many clock faces as a design tradition, and the converter reads it as 4 but shows the standard IV.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The Romans had no symbol for zero; the converter starts at 1.
Can I type lowercase letters?
Yes. mmxxvi and MMXXVI give the same result.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser.
