How to type Morse code here
Use a full stop or dot (.) for a short signal and a hyphen (-) for a long one. Put one space between letters and a slash (/) between words, for example “.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..” for HELLO WORLD. The translator also accepts the symbols · • for dots and _ − – for dashes, and treats three or more spaces as a word gap. Morse code has no capital or small letters, so text output is in capitals.
Which characters are supported
The letters A–Z, the digits 0–9, É, and the punctuation marks . , ? ' / ( ) : = + - " and @, as defined in the International Morse Code standard (ITU-R M.1677-1). Russian Cyrillic letters are encoded with the Russian Morse alphabet; to decode Cyrillic, choose Cyrillic under Alphabet. Other accented Latin letters (á, ñ, ö, ệ and so on) have no international code, so the accent is removed and the base letter is sent (Ñ becomes N); the result lists which letters were changed. Letters from other alphabets (Greek, Arabic, Chinese and others), Ukrainian-only letters such as Є and Ї, emoji and symbols such as ! & ; $ are skipped and listed under the result, so nothing disappears silently.
How the sound is made
Play sound generates a 600 Hz tone in your browser with the Web Audio API, at about 20 words per minute. A dot lasts one unit, a dash three units, the gap inside a letter one unit, the gap between letters three units and the gap between words seven units. If your browser does not support Web Audio, the button is hidden.
Frequently asked questions
What is SOS in Morse code?
SOS is ... --- ... (three dots, three dashes, three dots). As a distress signal it is sent as one continuous sequence without the usual gaps between letters.
How do I separate letters and words?
Put one space between the letters of a word and a slash (/) between words. Three or more spaces also count as a word gap.
Why was one of my characters skipped or changed?
It has no code in International Morse (ITU-R M.1677-1). Accented Latin letters are sent as their base letter (ñ becomes N). Letters from alphabets other than Latin and Russian Cyrillic, emoji and symbols like ! & ; are skipped. Both lists appear under the result.
Can I translate Russian Morse code?
Yes. Cyrillic text is encoded with the Russian Morse alphabet automatically. To decode, choose Cyrillic under Alphabet, because many Russian codes are the same as Latin ones (.- is A in both). Punctuation follows the international standard.
Can I listen to the Morse code?
Yes. Play sound plays the code at about 20 words per minute with a 600 Hz tone, generated in your browser. Stop ends playback.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Translation and sound both run in your browser. Your text is not sent to a server or stored.
