What changes when Dutch text becomes Croatian

Seven cases instead of fixed word forms

Dutch nouns barely change form, but Croatian has seven cases, and the ending shows the role of the word. “In Zagreb” becomes “u Zagrebu”, while “naar Zagreb” becomes “u Zagreb”. The same preposition takes a different case depending on whether you are somewhere or going there.

u and jij versus Vi and ti

Dutch “u” roughly matches Croatian “Vi”, and “jij” matches “ti”. The Croatian verb changes too: “Kunt u mij helpen?” becomes “Možete li mi pomoći?”. In formal letters, “Vi” is often capitalized. Use the Tone setting to steer this choice.

No articles, but gender in the past tense

Croatian has no equivalent of “de”, “het” or “een”. On the other hand, past-tense verbs agree with the speaker’s gender. “Ik heb gewerkt” is “radio sam” for a man and “radila sam” for a woman. If the Dutch does not reveal who is speaking, check this form.

Dates and month names

Dutch writes “3 mei 2025”, while Croatian usually writes “3. svibnja 2025.”, with a full stop after the day and the year. Croatian month names are their own Slavic words, such as “svibanj” for May, so they do not resemble the Dutch names.

How do I translate a Dutch text into Croatian here?

Paste or type your Dutch text, or use Dictate to speak it. Keep Dutch or automatic detection as the source and Croatian as the target, choose a Tone and start the translation. The Meaning kept: label then shows how closely the result follows the original.

Why does the same Dutch word get different endings in Croatian?

Croatian marks case, gender and number in word endings, so one Dutch noun can appear in several forms depending on its role in the sentence. That is expected, and not an error. Still check names and places, because their case endings are easy to overlook.

How much text can I translate at once, and can I upload a document?

Each run takes up to 5,000 characters, so split longer texts into parts. You can open a DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT file, and its text is placed in the editor. Formatting is not kept, and PDFs are not supported, but photos and screenshots can be read with the «Photo / screenshot» button.

Is it safe to translate a rental agreement or a private email?

Your text is sent to an AI model, translated, returned and then discarded. It is not stored or used for training. For contracts, still double-check names, amounts, dates and negations yourself.

Can I translate Croatian back into Dutch?

Yes. Click Swap languages and the direction flips while your text stays in place, which is handy for reading a Croatian reply.

Should I use formal or casual Croatian?

For landlords, officials or business contacts, choose Formal (business email), which leans towards Vi. For friends and family, Casual fits better, and Match the original follows the tone of your Dutch text.

Can I hear how the Croatian translation sounds?

Yes, Read aloud plays the translation with your browser’s voice, or with an AI voice if your browser has no Croatian voice. Croatian spelling is largely phonetic, so there is no separate pronunciation view.

Can I translate a photo of a Croatian menu or sign?

Yes. Click "Photo / screenshot" next to the Translate button to choose a photo, take one with your camera, or paste a photo or screenshot. The image is sent to the server and an AI model for reading, is not stored, and the extracted text is placed in the input box for translation. You can also type the words into the box or use Dictate, and then translate them.
