What to know about translating English into Finnish

Finnish uses endings to show meaning

Finnish uses the Latin alphabet and is written from left to right, like English, so it does not need romanization. Finnish case endings often express relationships that English conveys with prepositions. For example, talossa means “in the house,” while talosta means “from the house.” The right ending depends on how the word is used in the sentence.

Word order and context both matter

Finnish often follows a subject–verb–object order, but word order can shift to put emphasis on different parts of a sentence. Finnish has no grammatical gender, and hän can mean “he” or “she”; context helps determine the intended meaning. English articles such as “a” and “the” also do not have direct equivalents in Finnish.

Politeness does not map word for word

Finnish sinä is the informal singular “you.” Te can address more than one person or be used as a formal “you.” In everyday Finnish, sinä is common even when a request is polite, so formality often comes through the wording rather than a direct pronoun swap. Use Tone to choose a formal, casual or original-matching style.

How do I translate English to Finnish here?

Enter or paste your English text, choose a tone if you like, then run the translation. You can review the result and use Show alternatives for other phrasings.

Can I translate an English sentence into Finnish?

Yes. Enter a sentence or a longer passage, up to 5,000 characters per run. Finnish word endings can carry meanings that English expresses with separate words, so check the result in context.

Should I choose a formal or casual tone?

Use Tone to select Formal (business email), Casual or Match the original. Finnish politeness may be expressed through the wording, not just through a pronoun.

How much text can I translate, and which files can I open?

Each run supports up to 5,000 characters; split longer text into parts. You can open DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT files, but formatting is not preserved. PDF files are not supported; for photos and screenshots, use the «Photo / screenshot» button.

Is the English text I translate stored?

The text is sent to an AI model, translated, returned and discarded. It is not stored or used for training, but avoid entering sensitive information you do not want sent to an AI model.

Can I hear Finnish pronunciation?

Use Read aloud to hear the translation with a browser voice, or an AI voice fallback if the browser has no voice for Finnish. This is not a pronunciation guide.

Can I translate Finnish back into English?

Yes. Use Swap languages to reverse the direction while keeping the text, then translate in the other direction.

Can I translate a photo or have a live voice conversation?

You can translate a photo, but not have a live voice conversation. Use the “Photo / screenshot” button next to Translate; the image is sent to a server and an AI model only to read the text, and it is not stored. Live voice conversations are not available. Dictate can put speech-to-text into the input box, which you can then translate.
